In 1935 the first flight into Tiree took place. A scheduled service to and from Abbotsinch, near Paisley, began in the following year.

During World War 2, a large air base with concrete runways was built at The Reef - a low lying area of machair in the middle of Tiree. There was a huge temporary influx of forces personnel, peaking at 4000, from many allied countries. Coastal Command operated anti submarine patrols far out into the Atlantic from Tiree.

Later this air base became the present Tiree Airport which is operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited. Currently, a flight operated by Loganair / British Airways arrives from and returns to Glasgow six days a week (not Sundays).
