Tiree Images > Other Collections > Happy Valley
Happy Valley lies south of Hynish on the south west corner of Tiree. The traditional name is Traigh Balbhaig and the rocky ridge to the east of the beach is called Cleite Mhor. At the seaward end of the ridge lies the hill fort of Dun Cleite. The beach at Happy Valley has interestingly eroded rock formations which seem to rise out of the waves like dark sea serpents! The main beach comprises fairly large pebbles, however just to the north along the coast lie several small bays which are often sandy. The name 'Happy Valley' is clearly a recent one (in comparison to the normally ancient nature of Tiree place names ) and is thought to have originated from Glasgow Guides who used to spend their summer camp there.
